14 entries · Full A to Z dictionary

The sun, moon and stars, fire and wind, mountains, trees and gardens are some of the Qur'an's favourite pictures, and Yusuf's first dream is made of sky. That gives these entries a firm starting point in the language of revelation, even when no hadith interprets the image in a sleeper's dream. Where the evidence is only the Qur'an's use of a word, the entry says so.

The cautionary ones are darkness, smoke and earthquake, and they are cautionary because the Qur'an uses them for trials and for the Hour, not because a dream of them predicts anything. The gentle ones, the dawn, the moon, a tree, a garden, borrow the opposite imagery. Read each as a convention with a source, never as a forecast.
