Wind in a dream
Wind is one of those symbols the Qur’an itself uses in two opposite directions: winds sent as glad tidings before the mercy of rain, and winds sent as destruction upon wrongdoing peoples. The interpreters read the dream by asking which wind blew.
In the readings handed down from Ibn Sirin and an-Nabulsi, wind (ريح) was read by its character. A gentle breeze leans toward mercy, relief and good news arriving. A violent, destructive wind leans toward trial and upheaval. The wind’s behaviour is the whole reading.
Two winds in the tradition
The gentle wind that stirs before rain carries the same hopeful sense as rain itself: something good approaching. The destroying wind belongs with the darker weather of the tradition, near the flood and the storm at sea.
