Ants in a dream
The Qur’an names a surah after the ant, and in it the smallest of creatures speaks and a prophet smiles. The interpreters kept that respect: one ant is a small thing, but ants are never one.
In the readings handed down from Ibn Sirin and an-Nabulsi, ants (نمل) were read as many small things: numerous people such as kin, workers or soldiers; small persistent gains or worries; and, carrying food into a house, provision arriving. Leaving with it, provision going out.
The core reading: the strength of the many
What one ant cannot carry, the column carries, so the interpreters read ants as multiplicity: people, efforts or concerns that matter by their number. Ants entering a house with food were a favourite image of increase, the industrious opposite of the spider’s frail scheming.
Provision and increase arriving, small and steady.
Provision going out, in some readings a departure from the place.
Many people or efforts at work: kin, helpers, or persistent tasks.
Small persistent irritations, many and minor.
