Hell (Jahannam) in a dream
This dream frightens people more than any other religious image, so the tradition’s actual reading deserves to be said clearly: the interpreters did not treat seeing Hell as a verdict. They treated it as a warning arriving early, which is a form of mercy.
In the readings handed down from Ibn Sirin and an-Nabulsi, Hell (جهنم) in a dream was read as a warning sent in mercy: a call to turn back from a specific wrong, or to wake from heedlessness, while turning back is still easy. It is not a verdict on anyone’s destination, which belongs to Allah alone.
A warning is not a sentence
A warning exists precisely because the outcome is still open: no one warns a person about what cannot be changed. That is how the interpreters read this dream, as the counterpart of Paradise, whose dream encourages toward good as this one urges away from harm. Its summons to self-accounting is the same one the Day of Judgment carries.
